State of the Arts...

What do you know about the arts community and its offerings in Dallas? Are we a “world-class” arts community with an upscale Arts District with everything that any cultural icon would love to experience? Or, are we lagging behind in involving all segments of the community in the wonderful world of the cultural arts? More than a dozen arts leaders and advocates will talk about the economic impact of the arts in Dallas. How our city compares to other cities around the nation and the world. What’s right and what needs work! One thing that’s definite…there’s a lot going on!

Join us Monday, June 16th at 2:00 p.m. for a LIVE interactive cablecast about the Dallas arts community. Curtis King from the Black Academy of Arts and Letter, Jac Alder from Theatre Three, Charles Santos from TITAS, visual artist Viola Del Gado, Dallas Cultural Affairs Commission Chair Judy Pollock, Joanna St. Angelo from the Sammons Center for the Arts and many more will discuss the good, the bad and the not so cool aspects of our arts community.

Three weeks!!

Three weeks!! Dean Armstrong, spoke those short words to me almost three weeks ago today. I had three weeks to mold a group of El Centro College students into television professionals. Then, they would be expected to create a talk show to be aired on our network. Three weeks! Those words stuck in my mind like an annoying song looping over and over again. The pace of the class was quick, but they followed me every step of the way. We learned from each other’s mistakes, and celebrated our achievements together. Today I watched them produce their first show. They created a show that was both interesting and relevant. They have become a team. Those two short words that I mentioned were stuck in my mind have been replaced by two new words. Enormous Pride!!  Congratulations to all of the El Centro students. You have really done something amazing.

Time is speeding up

Is time speeding up? It seems to me that just yesterday we were celebrating Christmas and New Year’s. Now, 2008 is almost half over, school is out for the summer and our Summer Media Camps are already underway.

A summer class from El   Centro will be with us for three weeks learning everything they need to know to produce a television show. Six Exxon Green Team interns will be working with us this summer to produce public service announcements about being good stewards of our environment and we are partnering with the Dallas Park & Recreation department, Dallas Children’s Theatre and other non-profits to make this summer one to remember for young people lucky enough to be enrolled in one of our Summer Media Camps.

On September 13th, we are sponsoring the first annual S3 = Student Success Summit to provide the motivation, nurturing and process that 8th and 9th grade students need to kick off a successful school year. Best-selling author Stedman Graham will bring his “Nine Step Plan for Success” to Dallas. Teens and their parents or caregivers will learn about goal-setting and goal attainment, individual accountability and personal development. Time is of the essence. We can’t let our teens and their families down. Let us know if we can count on your involvement!

Welcome to Dallas iMedia blog page

We’ve been talking about hosting a blog for months. Social networking is a must in today’s world. To be honest about it, I just recently learned about “social networking”. I was too embarrassed to let people know that I didn’t know what it means and how you do it. Then, our content partner, Mike Orren at PegasusNews.com shared with us the value of spending a few minutes several times a week “sharing”. But the day-to-day responsibilities of operating an organization that provides user-generated content for three cable channels, that offers on-going youth media literacy training and that is constantly changing and working to improve hasn’t left much time to focus on anything except the next thing that we have to do.

All that changed when Manuel Vasquez, iMedia Training Coordinator, said “Enough! We’re launching our blog on Saturday, May 31, 2008. So start writing!” Well, here I am. And, I’m so excited to hear back from you. Dallas iMedia Network is the most interesting and exhilarating place that I’ve ever worked. We are faced with new and interesting situations everyday and our team is talented and creative beyond anything imaginable.

Next time, I’m going to share with you about our next big event on September 13, 2008. S3 = Student Success Summit will have one of America’s most intriguing motivational speakers, best-selling authors and someone that you will be delighted to meet. So, until next time – show us some love and give Dallas iMedia Network a shout out!
